The Rödeby shooting case
Rödeby,
Blekinge, Sweden: Teenager who terrorised family shot dead
In the early hours of Saturday morning, October 6, 2007, a 15-year-old boy was
shot dead and his 16-year-old friend was seriously injured in the small town of
Rödeby in southern Sweden. A 50-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted
murder.
According to the statement released to
the press, the family have been threatened and harassed by the same gang of
youngsters for more than two years.
That same evening in Stockholm, a
16-year-old boy, Riccardo
Campogiani, was beaten and kicked to death by other youngsters. Four
teenagers have been prosecuted and sentenced for the crime.
On October 10, two teenage boys aged 15 and 16 years, were formally charged for
torturing and killing a handicapped 55-year-old man. A third teenager, 15 years
of age, has been charged with grievous bodily harm. According to the police
investigations the boys broke into the man's apartment on three different
occasions to beat him with a baseball bat and knuckle-dusters. Their first
attack took place in the afternoon and the second was in the evening after they
had eaten dinner. During the night they chatted on the Internet and decided
that they would go back a third time to finish him off. The man was dying at
the time and they cut him several times with a knife and poured salt in his
wounds.
Voices are now being raised condemning
parents' reluctance (read: fear) to set limits for their children, the
indifference of the police and the social services towards young offenders and
the complete disrespect that the youngsters show for other people, whether they
be children or adults.
