Hello Ruby and Marianne,

My name is Margaret McGrath. I am from Australia and am associated with a group here called "Origins Inc" which was successful in forcing an inquiry into adoption practices in Australia during the period 1950 to 1998, although focussing primarily on the "peak" adoption period of the 60s and 70s.

The Committee of Inquiry heard evidence for two years into these practices and in December 2000 handed down a report finding some of these practices by social workers and health care workers to be illegal, unlawful and unethical.

If you would like to read more about the report (it's quite lengthy), it can be read online at:

http://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au - Committees - Reports - Social Issues Standing Committee

The report is called "Releasing the Past" and was tabled in the New South Wales Parliament only two weeks ago but, as yet, no official response by the government has been made.

Origins Inc's website is at:

http://www.angelfire.com/or/originsnsw/

There is also an online forum at Delphi, which can be reached via a link on the Origins website.

I have visited your site a couple of times now but this is the first time I've seen a contact email. I had bookmarked the site the first time I saw it and can't remember what specific words I used in my initial search, however, I think it may have been "social justice" or "social workers". I am interested in anything to do with adoption. I was a 17-year-old unmarried mother in 1966 and have only discovered in January this year that my daughter was taken from me by illegal means. Frankly, I hope I live long enough to see adoption banned forever.

Congratulations on your website. There is a lot of valuable information there and the links to other sites have been very helpful to me in understanding where to focus my energies. Keep up the excellent work.

Kind regards,

Margaret
